Shanghai Doll arrested

May 30th, 2011

A Shanghai doll got arrested in Hong Kongafter frolicking in an untoward manner in the pool of the Grand Hyatt. Hmm, Shanghai decadence doesn’t really translate well into Hong Kong. In other news, it sounds like all the big names at the Hong Kong Art Fair did well as expected. I was always of the opinion you could plonk a Rolls Royce down in one of those art fair stands and it would sell, and lo and behold Jeff Koons paints an M3. And someone dropped $50 million on a set of Warhol Maos. Art Basel (the world’s top art fair) is taking over Art HK from next year, moving the date to February. Expect more of same from now on. That old tax free status in HK works wonders. The only likely way this situation will change is if China drops its 30% tax on art sales, and invests in a series of laws that protect artists and eradicates censorship, and auction houses on the mainland stop being dodgy. Hmm, could take a while…though Hainan may be a possible location for this sea change.

Radical change at Contrasts Gallery- a new future for some

May 28th, 2011

It has been announced that Pearl Lam will change the name of Contrast Gallery to…Pearl Lam Galleries. Genius. Shanghai Eye takes its hat off. And the hat off the hamster, and the blindfold. And the hats off those people who do not even wear hats. Wishing Pearl a bright future with this new move. Also hoping the new move will bring Pearl back into the Shanghai Eye top ten search terms ranking, at least replacing Thames Town, come on we know you can do it!

DANNO D’IMMAGINE

What is the perception of Italy abroad?

Itis an acquired view that in recent years the perception of Italy in othercountries is less and less positive. It is the sharpness of this decline thaturged me to investigate the issue from an artistic prospective. Despite theexplicitness of its sociopolitical component, the project originates from threesimple elements: common sense, responsibility and dignity. These componentshave been consciously and carefully blended in a thick layer of creativity. Itis my opinion that art should stimulate and lead the public to a critic andconstructive observation of reality. So, I asked to Italian artists based inChina to provide an artistic suggestion, a site-specific work, in response tothis matter. In the following step, I selected works of artists who are livingin Italy in order to gather a more ‘internal’ substantiation.
