The Chinese press have begun to pick up on the whole ‘Weihai 696′ thing. There is a full page article in today’s Xinwen Wubao, a kind of popular tabloid. The article basically says that the Weihai studios are a lot cheaper and more conveniently located than the Morganshan Road studio area, but if the artists actually succeed in saving the place that will probably change. Hmm, an iron wheel of logic. The article is very positive on the whole, encouraging even.

It had to happen eventually. A reality art TV show. Looks painful. In flash art it says something along the lines of ‘the winner will be flavour of the month while the others will contemplate day jobs.’ hmm.

The Weihai Road 696 art event is ‘a go.’ The event will be on April 8. First a joint show of 22 artists at Doulun Art Gallery, and then a kind of party
at the studios. There is an introduction in English and Chinese here. Check it out, a Shanghai Eye painting used in the illustration .woo.
(Its first painting in the second row).

A friend called and said I should go have a look at this building, which I then did. The owners of the building have written an essay in the building’s windows, as the building has been condemned after the nearby subway construction caused serious subsidence. And also it seems someone ran off with the compensation money…
It inspired a few new pieces, part of the inevitable development and reform process..

At some point 上海 eye should get round to sorting all these links out. Anyhow, in the meantime this site is pretty good, Chinese only though. Has a lot of art news and various picture galleries of modern Chinese and international art.
