Books about Shanghai

Category: News, Random Shanghai stuff... --- December 28th, 2007

Shanghai Eye came across this exhaustive list of books written about Shanghai.

It contains memorable titles like the following:

Hell over Shanghai. Eye Witness’ Reports. London: Modern Books 1932. Four Month of War. …. Foreign Devils Had Light Eyes: A Memoir of Shanghai, 1933-1939.

As I understand from my rusty German the list was originally compiled by someone in a library in Braunschweig University (sp?), and then the person who found the original list has updated it with all new publications, which are marked with a ‘$.’

Shanghai World Expo exposes new mascot, looks like a Pekinese, controversy

Category: News, Random Shanghai stuff... --- December 27th, 2007

It seems Shanghai has a new world expo mascot. What is that you  might ask? Shanghai Eye was at the ’seminar on world expo mascot’ - attended by various luminaries, including  Alan Chan and Mi Qiu. How did this piece of ______ come about? Well, it was a 3 hour seminar, held on a boat. After one hour’s introduction of all the important people in attendance it was announced the boat was leaving the pier. Your correspondent then fled back to dry land over the gangplank, so we’ll never know.

More info on the mascot is here.

Category: News, Paintblog, Random Shanghai stuff... --- December 27th, 2007

3rd Place magazine, a Chinese language magazine it seems that is owned by Starbucks China, and distributed throughout their stores, has done a feature on your very own Shanghai Eye. To be honest your correspondent hadn’t heard of this magazine before they came to the door with a couple of copies with the article already published. But hey, well, its probably popular among the cappuchino drinkers out there right? How was I to know….

Man, Noam Chomsky is sure gonna blank me next time I see him. Its subversion from within Noam, honest..

Shanghai art maven in NYT

Pearl Lam has had a write up in the New York Times:

“It’s quite bonkers,” Pearl Lam said of her 22nd-floor, 9,700-square-foot loft in the French Concession district here. The apartment, a mix of ancient Chinese artifacts and Western and Chinese contemporary art and design, may in fact be the wildest interior in the city. Decorated over the course of the last four years, it is also one of the most impressive — not to say overwhelming — showcases of the work Ms. Lam champions through her Contrasts gallery, which now has four branches in China.
