Mini news roundup

Category: News, Random Shanghai stuff... --- September 28th, 2008

The FT has posted a Phillip Dodd profile of Shanghai artist Sun Liang.

“Imagine the Chinese equivalent of George Baselitz, the German artist with a lyrical leaning yet historical imagination; someone capable of the most delicate touch and of the most deliberate bluntness. One of Sun’s 1989 paintings is called “Icarus and the Nine Suns” - which marries the Greek myth of the man who flew too near the sun with the Chinese myth of the bird shot for trying to fly too far from the earth.”

BREAKING NEWS
##############
Following the global economic collapse, it looks like the first visible sign here in the fair city of Shanghai will be the sale of AIG owned Shanghai center (portman) to who ever wants it. Get ready for a rough 2009. As one US broker told Shanghai Eye, “this last week historically has been very significant, we have seen a real shift of financial markets from the US to Asia.”

Despite the financial turmoil we all know the art market is doing OK - after all in depressions art buyers tend to thrive. Saying that Chinese media are getting rather itchy, as I guess no one told them.
Now, bad boy of the financial markets, Andy Xie, who has been preaching economic doom for years, has turned his attention to art. “Contemporary Chinese art may be worthless,” he told Shanghai Securities News. He then goes on at length about financial bubbles and such things.
Can he not go back to critiquing bonds, derivatives and Chinese government macro economic policies?
His long predicted economic collapse has yet to appear. Erm…

Eds note: less economics please

Hirst shark catcher revealed

Category: News, Random Shanghai stuff... --- September 24th, 2008

THe man who catches Hirst sharks is interviewed here.
He said: “I’ve been a shark hunter all my life, so I found it a great honour to have someone like Damien Hirst call and ask me to catch one.

“It’s brilliant when I see pictures of the sharks I’ve supplied splashed over papers around the world — and also to see the incredible prices they fetch.

“To think what Damien Hirst has done just by putting his name to a shark.

Art press slammed?

Category: News, Random Shanghai stuff... --- September 23rd, 2008

Here’s an interesting video on the art newspaper website

Ivor Braka, independent art dealer and former student of Sotheby`s, hits out at “Grub Street” reporting in a recent article in The Art Newspaper. The article referred to unsold works by Damien Hirst ahead of his solo auction at Sotheby`s in September 2008.

On China related topic here’s an interview with Ulli Sigg, and that train.
The train piece is here.
(erm artist name pronounced wrongly..)
