China Museums- review

Danwei has a review here of a new book out- a guide to China’s Museums. Definitely worth a read.
Shanghai Eye received a copy of this book, and met the author’s recently around the time of the literary festival. It is actually a really useful book, pointing out various museums I hadn’t heard of, as well as highlighting my favourites, such as the Hunan Provincial Museum in Changsha, which has some of the most interesting historical artifacts I have ever seen. It also pointed me to Shanghai Children’s Museum (which has a planetarium), which the little Shanghai Eye also enjoyed.
As China is going on a major museum build out, this book is a very timely record of what we have now, and if you like to spend your (free) days soaking up a bit of culture try it out. It goes into a lot more detail than the Lonely Planets, and other assorted pocket guides, and has a lot of unavailable elsewhere details.
