The organizers announced to the Art Newspaper that the Shanghai Fine Jewelry and Art Fair (SJFAF) will be held from May 16-23, 2010. The fair’s inaugural edition was in 2007, and the fair has been in hiatus until satisfactory financing and local partnerships were in place. The second edition was originally scheduled for Autumn 2008, but was postponed due to difficulties in the regulatory situation during the Beijing Olympics.
“This is the only Fine Art fair in Asia since 1994 in Hong Kong, and before that 1989 in Japan,” said Maximin Berko, vice-president of SFJAF.
The fair will be in the Shanghai International Exhibition Center, offering unique jewelry pieces, antique artworks as well as ‘blue chip’ modern and contemporary art. The organizers expect 45-50 galleries will take part. “A Fine Art fair offers safe values- I mean for investment, the Chinese can feel safe in the value, for instance if you buy an Anish Kapoor piece you can be confident it will keep its value. We will also bring European gallery standards to China, and hope longer term to bring Chinese galleries to Europe, as there are no Chinese galleries at Fine Art fairs in Europe,” Berko said.
Berko and SJFAF President Nicolo Mori outlined that they have secured a private investor, and partnerships with China customs, China’s International Art and Cultural Exchange Association, and Bund 18, to facilitate matters. They said the Mayor of Shanghai will attend the opening ceremony, and the fair will have strong government support. Mori outlined the fair will operate under the same regulatory conditions as a bonded area. “Actually the taxation laws are easier in China than in Europe, though China would be smart to reduce taxes,” Mori said.
“It is all a matter of management- which is why we have our partners,” Berko said.
