John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize
The upcoming launch of the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize in Shanghai, China will mark
the first time the competition has been launched outside of Liverpool, England. This collaboration with
Shanghai, Liverpool’s sister city, will be an exciting move. With a decorated 50-year history, the John
Moores Contemporary Painting Prize is the UK’s best-known painting competition for contemporary
art.
From 2010, the John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize will be held in China every two
years. The cooperation between the Chinese and British contemporary art worlds will open up a new
model for Chinese contemporary art and create new norms in Chinese academia.
The John Moores (Shanghai) will maintain the British Contemporary Prize’s model and concept,
sponsored by the British John Moores Foundation, co-organized by Shanghai University College of
Fine Arts, Liverpool Biennial, and Shanghai Gallery of Art at Three on the Bund. To ensure the
openness of this competition, there will be no entry fee for any Chinese painter who wishes to
participate in this competition.
Three judges from the UK and two from China will come together to form the Vetting Committee, the
decision-making body for the John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize.
The submitted artworks will be evaluated by two rounds. The judges will assess artworks based upon
the digital images for the first round, and on the originals for the second round. To ensure the fairness of
the competition, the whole judging process will be anonymous. An appropriate mechanism for judges
voting and scoring will be set to guarantee the democratic nature of this competition.
The John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize takes the principles of the John Moores
Foundation as “To explore, train, and encourage artists who create contemporary painting by modern
media.” There will be the opportunity for selected works to be profiled, providing a platform for artists.
The short listed works from prize winners in John Moores (Shanghai) will be exhibited in the Walker
Art Gallery, Liverpool, UK alongside the UK prize winners. The exhibition will remain for the period
of the Liverpool Biennial festival to be held September 2010.
John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize will be launched in March 2010. Artists are
invited to submit their entries from March 20th to June 1st, 2010. For further information, please visit the
